I have a user list where several fields in a sharepoint list that were originally created as required, but would now like to make them not required. I have already tried simply unchecking the required field checkbox, but that does not work. Any other ways to do this?

Actually that is how you do it, if you have gone to the list settings page, change column page, and de-selected "Require that this column contains information: " (choosing No), then those columns should no longer be mandatory.

If that isn't working then something else must be going on.  Do you know if the page is customized in any way?  What form is this ocurring in - New or Edit - do you have the same problem in both?
