when I try to right click on the .design images and choose open with and choose always open with expression design it seems to work.  The issue is then I go to open the files an error pops up.  maindesign.design is not a valid win32 application.  I can still open it when I go to design and choose file open. But it does not work when I just clik on the file from the folder it is located in. 

Any ideas on how to fix this error.

I would say your file association for .Design files is messed up on that machine. maindesign.design should not be trying to open itself or another .Design file. The application shell is Design.exe.

To resolve, try doing the following:

On Windows Vista or Windows 7:

1. Navigate to the folder where any .Design file is located.
2. Right click the file, left click on Properties
3. There should be an "Opens With" section with a "Change..." button - click the Change button.
4. Click the "Browse" button in the "Open With" dialog that comes up and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Expression\Design 3\Design.exe

If you are running Expression Design 2, the "Design 3" in the path above will read "Design 2" and if you are running the first version of Design the path should read just "Design". Select the "Design.exe" file by left clicking it once to highlight it and then click OK. Then click Apply and OK again.

That should change the file association and the icon associated with the file. When you double click the file, it should now use Design.exe to open the .Design file.
