Are there any specific steps required to make Visual Studio 2012 work with Platform SDK 8.1 on Windows Server 2012 R2 server? From what I gather from several discussions on the forums, VS2012 needs special hacks to work with Platform SDK 8.1. If this is true, is there a definitive guide about the right way to make this combination work?

Have you tried to install the Windows SDK 8.1 on your computer and it is successful? Please check this doc: Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows 8.1

Go to System requirement>Support operating systems, we can find it is only support on Windows 8.1, 8,7 and Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, not includes your OS version Windows Server 2012 R2, sorry for this inconvenience.
