I have been using my current software for many years. In the last month I have hit a problem with using the update command.

I am trying to update a value that has a value of say 16.56  The operative word is the "." as the computer puts in its place a ","

which when you run a update sql is rejects it as invalid characters. This is very frustrating as it is in a stock control system.

Would it have anything to do with your computer's Regional Settings? Try setting it to use a decimal separator and see if it makes any difference.
