Let's say I see an interesting question to which I don't know the answer. So I want to follow the thread.

Today the only way the thread appears in "My threads" section is when I reply to the thread.

In this case, I don't want to reply to the thread... but I want to simply follow it.

If you click on the Thread's header, it will take you to a page that just shows the Thread, and nothing else.  From the "single thread view", there's an option at the top left that says "Alert Me".

Click that, and you'll get alerts (without responding).
