Will Silverlight recognize the aspect ratio of Windows Media-files, and display them accordingly? For example, if I have a widescreen vide encoded in the 720x576 resolution, is it possible to display this as 16:9?

MediaElement.Stretch will specify how the video fits into its frame.  By default it stretches but maintains aspect ratio.  I am not sure how you want it to know what your screen is or why that matters.  Could you rephrase?
