Does anyone know how to control the microphone AGC (or mic boost) setting of a generic USB audio device?

An end user can find this switch in the WinXP Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices / Audio / Sound Recording / Volume /  Advanced / AGC
(It's on the same page as Bass & Treble). For some reason it says AGC but the actual function is a static 20dB boost.
However I need to turn the Mic Boost off programmatically both in XP and Vista.

The application is a transfer function measurement through the sound card. I'm doing in/out volume setting via a purchased ActiveX control but it can't access the AGC/Mic boost setting.

In seven the AGC Setting is found by Going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Recording (Select Your Device) > Properties > Custom.
