I want to learn developing applications with SQL Server databases.

I don't have any versions of SQL Server except whatever was installed with Visual Studio 2013. I see that:

Many packages are installed on my PC that are to do with SQL Server 2012, like Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects. Also Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB and Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0 SP1 x64 ENU.

sqlservr.exe is running on the PC

SQLCMD does not find SQL Server. When I run SQLCMD in an elevated command window (Windows 10), it fails. Cant open a connection.

In Visual Studio, when I try to connect to a database or a server, it does not find any servers.

So, is SQL Server installed with this edition of VS 2013?

If not, which version of SQL Server Express should I install? Is SQL Server Express 2012 the most compatible?

SQL Server and visual studio are separate products.
