What are you using for SSO? If using ADFS w/ SAML then the answer would be yes, as ADFS will only relay to a site enabled with SSL. What is going to be your SSO provider?

You should convert to SSL regardless of SSO or not. There's no reason to continue using HTTP and can pose a security risk if you're using Office Web Apps, Workflow Manager, SharePoint Apps, Exchange integration, or anything else that uses OAuth tokens.
