Now that these fancy AR glasses (Project Glass) are coming to the markets, I wonder how good would it play with Windows Phone 7.8 and 8?

Do I get it right that Google Glass relies on another device (smartphone) being connected via WiFi or Bluetooth and that you can't use Glass as a standalone device?

Let's say I want to make a timer app - could I make a plain WP app that can connect to Google Glass, accept commands and give feedback using the HUD/voice control?

Google Glass only has Wifi connectivity and therefore won't be of much use on the go without a Smartphone that provides such a Wifi hotspot (I guess Image Capture of Glass will work but searches, etc. won't).

That Wifi connection should be possible using the Internet Connection Sharing Capability of Windows Phone. For everything else there will need to be an App for Glass that implements the feature and maybe an app on the phone that can push it's data to Glass but basically Glass does not need a phone to support it aside from Internet Connectivity.
