it seems like this error occurs when i set the max download size to 512MB ( my largest file is 500MB ) if i set it back to the default, it gives a warning about reaching the maximum download limit for the large files instead of throwing the error.

If you set the MaxDownloadSize property of a Search service application to a value that's greater than 100 (default is 64), the indexing of files fails, November 10, 2015, update for SharePoint Server 2013 solved the issue.
