I've been following a Sharepoint course and after failing to install 2013 because of IIS roles I've decided to go with 2010, everything went fine until I got to the Configuration Wizard where, following exactly as the course goes, I encounter the error message in the title. The course I followed didn't do any kind of setup on SQL or anything like that. Do I need to manually create this database on my server?

yes you need a SQL instance to actually install SharePoint.

You can install SQL express for dev purposes, but i think if you are following a course that does not guide you to the basics of sharepoint install(sql is mandatory), maybe you should reevaluate if that course is actually... the right one for you.
