I purchased Visual Studio 2013 Professional a few years ago and have been using it fine ever since.

I have recently purchased a new laptop and wish to use this product on the new machine, but it says my product key cannot be used to extend the trial license. I didn't even know I was using a trial license until a red flag appeared saying I had 24 hours left as I assumed it would somehow use my Visual Studio account to know that I had paid already.

I just tried having a live chat with Microsoft but apparently the £500 I paid for a text editor and compiler doesn't entitle me to any direct help so they've advised me to post here.

Please help.

I've resolved this issue.

Trawling the internet revealed a post on Stack Overflow which implied that a custom version of vs_professional.exe is sent when you buy the product. By some miracle this file was still on my original PC from 3 years ago and I was able to use it to re-install on the laptop.

Initially I still got the "24 hours until expiry" warning and still wouldn't accept the product key but clicking the "Update product key" link did indeed update and fix the trial expiry warning.
