WDS would not install correctly but no error message in the log file helped me understand what was going on.  The install actually did pretty much complete though.  Afterwards, the Windows Search services would not start with an error 3 cannot find path as specified type error.  Eventually, I found the problem came down to the installer and the services not having this path already created:

.../All Users/Application Data/Microsoft/Search/Data/Applications/Windows

after creating this path the installer completed without errors and the service started fine.

Excellent work!  This fixed me as well.  WDS 3 was working fine until I booted this morning.  I tried re-installing but kept getting the errors in the application log:

The Windows Search Service has failed to remove the old catalog. Internal error <0,0x80070003>.
