Windows Desktop Search 4.0 Updater (KB940157) fails to install over and over again.

Since it was released as part of Windows Update my Vista Business SP1 installation is trying to install this Update
every couple of restarts (KB940157).

It is always the same procedure.
It starts with the updates available icon in the lower right (only this update is left).
After I choose to shutdown my computer Vista wants to install the update.
The last part (3/3) is always installed after I boot my computer for the next time.

After Update 3/3 is 100% finished my computer is rebooting again by itself showing me some text elements during bootup that you can usually see when you enter safe mode.
After this bootup process is finishes Vista tells me that there was a problem installing one of the updates and that it will revert to the status before the update.

After about 20-30 minutes I am finally able to use my computer. This happens over and over again. I can only avoid waiting every morning if I tell my notebook to enter standby.

I also tried installing KB940157 manually several times but it is always the same procedure described above.
I also don't have any uninstall option for WDS 4.0 or any entries in the registry searching for KB940157.

In the services Windows Search is on automatic but it is never started automatically.
When I try to start it manually it first seems to start but after a recheck a few seconds later the service is down again.
If I try to restart it again it gives me an error.

Translation from German error message:
Windows Search on Local Computer could not be started. Please see the event protocol for further information:

Errorcode: -2147218141


When I open the Indexing-Options in the control panel it tells me that no indexing service is running. All options are greyed out and I cannot do anything like starting to reindex here.

The Event log shows the following errors (translated from German) for every try to start the windows search service (I could also eMail an export of the errors in the event log in .evtx format if needed):

After this bunch of messages the Windows Search service is back to NOT running.

So far I tried every update related to Windows Search.
I tried to find an uninstaller searching my whole system including registry for KB940157 without a single hit.
I tried to enableand disable the old indexer in the windows components menu but nothing helped.
Since this update (KB940157) went wrong outlook keeps piling up elements to index and still counting up
without letting me search anything in the meantime.

What can I do to recover the search function in general and to avoid the annoying reinstallation of theconstantly failing update (KB940157)

I see that you posted this question some time ago and have received no responses.  I am having essentially the same problem and came upon your posting while searching for help.

 

This update (KB940157) installed okay on two of my Vista systems (one is the Business version running on a MAC and the other is Ultimate running on a home built desktop). The update will not install on my laptop (Dell XPS 1330 with Vista Home Premium), and I have had a similar experience to yours.

 

I wonder if you have found a solution to the problem elsewhere.
