I recently made the jump from Android to Windows Phone 8. I have been an avid Android fan for 3 years and even piddled around with App development.

While I sorely miss my full functioning, non-client, non-browser based apps. I think that I can live with WP8 seeing as the entire line is truly in an infant stage. 3(ish) years behind google and almost 6 behind iOS, Im giving it a fair shake.

I've decided to be proactive about this! I downloaded the SDK and was looking forward into learning the world of WP dev when BAM! "you must have Windows 8 to use this..." Alright. Round 2 after upgrading my OS. Download again, set to go but BAM! "your machine does not have a virtualization..."blah blah blah. No emulator...Alright, I'll register my phone. BAM! pay $100/year (really not that bad a deal for one who has $100 sitting, I dont.) or be a student and use your Dreamspark account. well...im no student but damn it man! I want to learn this stuff and be proactive about contributing to this platform!

I guess this is really just a rant and rave about how bummed I upgraded my OS so that I could try to contribute to Microsofts almost new frontier for app development, but they are not willing to cut a little slack in the budget department. :/ super bummed. If anyone knows of an alternative or some other way to help me out in getting started let me know!

Sounds so frustrating, but all marketplaces have a fee to be a dev, so it's not new or different. It does suck that you need W8 to dev for WP8. I wonder if this helps or hurts MS more- I cant upgrade any of my apps b.c I dont have or want W8, but I can run VS 2012.

Im not sure, but I believe you should be able to debug your projects with the phone emulator in the WP8 SDK. It's been this way since WP7, so im sure that should work. Thats how I started, and at least you would have someplace to work until you make up the
