What I am trying to make effectively two lists into one. The list could contain all the necessary columns for list a & list b.

The custom edit and display forms can not only be specified for lists, but content types also. So what you need to create is multiple content type definitions where in you will specify different edit and display forms.

Then these content types can be attached to single list by enabling multiple content type options in List Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Allow management of multiple content types.
