Well, I have a laptop from one of those less-than-conscientious manufacturers, and I've had to be careful about disconnecting my external hard drive(s) whenever I do a restart, and well, you guessed it, a few days ago I was less than careful, the restart proceeded, and when I failed to abort it, it ran a chkdsk on the external hard drive -- under brownout conditions, or so it seems -- and left me with a bunch of FOUND.00? files totaling about 60 GB, and no idea (other than my memory) of what was actually sequestered.

It seems that the answer to this question is "no" (that's the only answer I've heard), but I can't believe I'm the only person to have encountered this problem.  Indeed, many of the available data recovery packages don't even work on this type of problem: once the power is at the proper level, no problem is detected, and the FOUND.00? files don't trigger any data recovery.
