I have SharePoint 2016 and Exchange 2010 deployed.

I've configured incoming and outgoing email in SharePoint, and everything works.  Almost.  Outgoing email is fine.  Staff can configure alerts to their Exchange mailbox and receive them just fine.

Incoming mail is the issue.  As long as SMTP addresses are used, staff can email SharePoint lists and Exchange delivers the email to SharePoint perfectly. 

Then I configured incoming email so that SharePoint creates Active Directory Contacts for mail-enabled lists.  When I mail enable a list it creates a contact in the Active Directory OU specified and Exchange adds it to the GAL.  So far so good.

When staff emails SharePoint lists using the GAL entry instead of the SMTP address they get a bounce back.

     #550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.ExRecipNotFound; not found ##

The bounce back lists a different email address than the contact is configured with.

Any ideas why email delivered to a contact created by SharePoint gets bounced while email to the SMTP address is delivered fine.

Hi,

You should send email to email address you configured in SharePoint library. If someone send an email to wrong email address exchange will send an NDR.

If you use the GAL entry, SharePoint doesn’t understand and won’t send it to the appropriate list or library.
