I'm using Desktop Search to index not only my personal machine but also my home file server where backups, documents and photos are stored by adding UNC locations to the index path.

While indexing I keep having a "Problem with Shortcut" dialog box popping up.  The message is "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'target.lnk' refers to is unavailable.  Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."

This halts the index process and is seriously annoying.  How do I stop it?

Are you able to determine and locate the problem shortcut? From what you described, it sounds like the indexer is reading the target of the shortcut and trying to access it for some reason. Does that sound about right?

I've indexed invalid shortcuts (target of the shortcut is invalid) on UNC locations before, and I haven't seen the error you're getting. After I index the invalid shortcut on the UNC location, I can even search for it just fine. However, when I try to access the shortcut, it cannot find the target (this is expected).

Maybe you can further clarify your setup and when the error occurs? e.g. you get the error after backing up your computer's documents to the server, etc.
