Little home network running Windows XP SP3 on "server" and clients; a 400GB USB drive attached to the server.  All My Documents files stored on "server" in the USB drive (My Documents relocated there for all users and PCs) and shared (using Simple File Sharing) with permission to change files. 

Just downloaded Windows Search 4.0 (file version 6.3.4.1) and installed on all PCs.  Pointed the "server" indexing at the folder on the USB drive I wanted to be searchable (only 250 files and ~50MB).  When I try to search that folder from a client PC always "Nothing found in ...\blah... for query "whatsname".  This is done properly according to the instructions from MS: browse to the network folder and do an Explorer search or add the location in a search by double clicking the taskbar icon.  The files are definetly there and searchable as discovered by indexing the "server" folder from a client PC and then searchinig - everythinig found A OK - but having several indexes of the same stuff kinda defeats the point.  This same problem occurs on both client PCs, and when trying to search an indexed folder on a client from the "server".  I also had the "server" index a folder on its internal drive and tried searching that from the clients, but same thing happens. 

Is there a service that should be running which isn't?    WindowsSearch.exe and searchindexer.exe are both running on the clients and "server".  Should the older indexer service be enabled or disabled (though tried it both ways around).  What services should be registered, too: I had a problem with some services becoming unregistered (don't ask me how) which prevented Windows Update from working.  Never found out why, but reregistering them from Run does the trick.  All the options in Group Policy are not set, so defaults are being used there. 

What the heck is the problem?

The Windows Search Indexer specifically does not index thumbdrives.
It does, however, index USB hard drives.

The distinction is within how the drive reports itself:
thumbdrives report as "removable drives"
bigger external hard drives report as "fixed drives"
