We have your standard 3 server 2010 farm.   One Application server/two web front ends.    We're preparing to migrate to 2013 and I'm wondering if it makes sense to have a separate search server.   We have a ton of content but does the search functionality in Foundation 2013 warrant a stand alone server?  Would it be total overkill?

When you configure search topology, avoid mixing bulk processing and real time processing search components on the same physical server or virtual machine.  Crawl, content processing, and analytics processing components perform bulk processing. Index and query processing components perform real time processing.

Avoid mixing search components on a physical server or machine if the components will compete for the same resources. Here’s a table that illustrates the relative amount of resources that each component needs.
