On my Windows XP, I see that GUI windows do not start from time to time. By GUI windows, I mean any applications that have GUI interface or even 'right click' windows menus for files/folders that show options such as open, cut, copy, paste etc.
If I close a couple of existing GUI applications, then the new windows come up. My initial suspicion is that I am running out of RAM. But, if I open task manager and look for 'PF Delta' (page faults that indicate reads to disk), I do not see a big change between before and after closing some existing GUI applications.
So, I am thinking RAM is not the cause of this behaviour. And, CPU usage shows a lot of idle time. I wonder if there is some memory for graphics in XP in addition to RAM that is getting exhausted. If there is such memory, how do I monitor its usage? And, it is not video RAM, because I am talking about simple 'right click' menus and not any sophisticated graphics.
I appreciate any help on this. My productivity is reduced because of not being able to have visibility into all GUI windows.
