I have a minor issue with the Start Menu and creating custom sub menus.

I have several computers on my local network which I control from a central laptop. Under XP what I did was create a folder to contain the Remote Desktop (RDP) files containing the settings for each computer. Some are still XP some are Windows 7 and some are Server 2008. Each can be accessed with the same credentials but some are also laptops whic I don't keep connected all the time.

Thus I need to be able to store varying credentials and settings for each RDP.

Under XP all I did was store these in a folder and dropped it onto the start menu and instantly got a sub menu.

Windows 7 only seems to use a recent file list which doesn't allow for altering the settings. To alter the settings the only option I have is to open a new connection and edit the settings and hope that it doesn't get scolled off due to history and recent file list limitations. At the same time I was able to locate where these recent file settings were being stored, in the "Documents" library. I altered them and the settings were saved. However copying and pasting these files to create a new connection with the same settings did not allow a new entry to be displayed in the remote desktop sub menu. Also the context menu to allow for editing the RDP before connecting was not there, But this seems to be the intended functionality for recent files drop downs.

Clearly I am doing something wrong or missing the intended functionality.

I also tried pinning the folder containing the RDP's to the start menu but this did not create a sub menu. It simply pops open a folder displaying the links. While this works it is clunky and not my intended functionality.

Is these any way to create custom sub menus on the Start Menu in Windows 7?
