I am not sure if this is a good place to post this and obviously I know I will get Microsoft centric responses but here is a question we have been circling around:

We have in an organization the best and current network/security/back-end infrastructure money can buy. We also have funds to maintain that infrastructure. So when we need a service and it is primarily cloud-based (lets just say a Microsoft Dynamics product) why would we opt for the cloud over on premise. So our internal groups would argue, we have a great network we spend millions on then everything should run on premises. Sound logical but at the same time doesn't sound forward thinking. Am I wrong? Does anyone have any feedback on this scenario?

Well, if you want absolute security and have funds then I wouldn't suggest to opt for cloud based infrastructure. A business decision opting cloud based infra simply means that there is an acceptable risk (not always true though) and the company wants to save some money on equipment and human resources. There is always a constant war among security, control and ease of manageability. You are not wrong but at the same time you need to understand from the business point of view. Imagine your company needs to have a service which involves contend delivery to the customers. Now I understand you may have a lot of money to build your own CDN all across the globe but is it really a wise business decision? Since the main component of content delivery mechanism must be delivery speed, reliable network and integrity and these days all cloud based CDN providers have 99% up-time covering that. It makes sense to a wise executive to leverage third party multiple SaaS based CDNs for content delivery rather than building his own empire around the world. It can save millions and that can be spent over research or in paying your employees better. However, where the delivery is confidential or data exchange is classified as confidential/restricted, you must build your own infra completely isolated from the internet with absolute control over it.
