I have an issue where emails sent from my SharePoint Farm are not being received by people outside of our organization due to authentication issues. On investigation, emails sent without any pause in a workflow are being authenticated and received, but those sent by a workflow with a pause or start workflow action are not authenticated and never arrive.

    This is the only thing I've found validating that sharepoint treats emails differently based on how the workflow processes them.

    SharePoint actually does not send auth on any email (there was a bug in particular releases of SharePoint 2016 which did, but that was fixed). All email sent from SharePoint is anonymous. You need to enable relaying of anonymous mail on Exchange.
