I had a BSOD a week ago and went to look at event logs, dump files, etc. to see if I could understand what happened.  When I clicked to open the dump file it asked me to enter a registration key before it would open.  is this a Developer's tool?  I am just a regular user trying to understand.  I guess users like me are unable to view dump logs? Thanks very much for your  insight.

Dump files from a BSOD are not going to tell you anything unless you have an understanding of software and Windows and have the necessary tools and symbols installed.  The event log will have a message about the failure in a slightly more readable format.
