We have attempted to convert our development project from Visual Studio 2005 to Visual Studio 2010. The "solution" has two projects in it. One of these is a library whose source is in C/C++; the other project is a Makefile project that assembles some sources using ML and then links the resulting OBJ with the LIB produced via the other project. This has worked fine through a number of versions of Visual Studio.
