Using Access databases stored on our Sharepoint system. If two people use the database at the same time I get a message to say changes couldn't be merged and a second copy of the database is created. What are we doing wrong?

If you're using a standalone .accdb file, then I highly recommend that you do not try to "use" it from SharePoint. SharePoint is just a data repository, so when you open an Access database from it, it creates a copy, of the entire .accdb, to your local machine, and then opens that copy of it.
