you need to convert it to base64 string. If you are doing this by your own code you should read www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0821.txt to agree with the standard based on Requests for Comments  (rfc). i don`t know exactly if the rfc821 is the latest one, but you can just search for smtp and rfc to get all of them.
