So at the end, you are left with a tool, which is just extra development work, which takes lot of time, building the diagrams, view, and measures in DAX language. Additionally, to add extra dimensions or joins, someone has to reprocess/rebuild the cube. With Power BI you can drag and drop. Am I missing something here? (We are using Kimball DW, so fact and dims are legible, and Powerbi will auto detect relationship)

I think the only reason you would want SSAS added to a layer, is if you are still not getting good performance, then you have Azure DW with an extra compression SSAS layer.  But at this point, it becomes a performance issue factor decision. PowerBI can take care of the rest.

The SSAS component runs on an On-Premise SQL Server instance. The Azure equivalent is: Azure Analysis Services

But you are correct that with an 'Analysis Services' component, you are building your data model with the 'SQL Data Warehouse' container versus using PowerBI to pull-in the data and build the data model with in Power BI.
