https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure /storage/files/storage-files-简介

Hi,

We currently run an on-premises SBS 2011 Standard server which is the domain controller in our local area network. Microsoft support for this product ends in January 2020. We are thinking of lifting as much as possible to Azure in the cloud early next year. Is it possible to set up a virtual machine in Azure, such as Server 2016, which can be used as a domain controller for people to logon to (from our local area network) in accessing files (documents etc)? If not what is the best way to set up a file server in Azure? We will lift Exchange into the Cloud using Office 365.

Any thoughts and articles will be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

Mark

You can host your own domain controller in Azure to handle the logins for people on your on-premise network. However, I would highly suggest you look into Azure Active Directory instead. Azure Active Directory (AAD) will allow you to merge your on premise active directory directly with AAD in the cloud. This means that when you are ready to make the shift to Azure completely you will not have to do anything extra. You would simply be able to turn off your on premise domain controller and use AAD exclusively. Take a look at the some of the documentation in the link above.

As per setting up a file share in Azure, you have a few options. Yes, you can host it inside a virtual machine. But there is actually no need to do that. You can create a file share directly using an Azure Storage Account which means you will not have to worry about setting up and managing the VM that has the fileshare located in it.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-how-to-create-file-share

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/files/storage-files-introduction

This would mean there is less setup for you to manage and the cost would be significantly cheaper than hosting a VM with a file share in it.

Overall, we offer many ways for you to integrate your on premise network with Azure. It all starts with Azure Active Directory so I suggest you start by looking there.

Take a look at the links I provided and just let me know if you have any follow up questions or if I can clarify anything.
