On SharePoint 2013, After full crawl, I found  have some files under this Path. I think those are index files. Is it correct?

Path:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Data\Office Server\Applications\Search\Nodes\16D212\IndexComponent1\storage\data\SP19ea6a5e3a12.1.I.0.0\ms\%default

Because the index files size is large. I delete some Path from Search Service content source which have had been crawled.

Then I run the full crawl again, at the time following the pic. When full crawl completed, I haven't seen any change on this folder.

 

This folder was changed after 2 hours, one folder has been created and some of folders was been updated. The total size of the index folders is larger than before. I don't understrand this action.

Why the index folder changed at 2 hours later? 

Why the index folders size become larger even I make the crawl range smaller?

There are some folders have ".merge" extension and some of them not. What the meaning of the extension? What's the different of them.

If I never do index reset. Is it the index folder size will be larger and larger? Is it have some timer job or something to clean SharePoint index file automaticly.

Hi Maggie,

Per my several tests, the index file updates within the different time after start a crawl. Such as sometimes need about one hour, sometimes need only a few minutes. So I’m not very clear about the cause reason, it might depend on your SharePoint performance.

Index files are never directly modified. Instead, when the Index parts on one level become >10% of the level above, they are "merged" into a new part file at that next level above. So there are some .merge file in the index folder. So the index folder size will keep increase.

So when we configure Search service application, there is a requirement for search service application. To release more storage in index folder, I suggest you using Disk Cleanup to delete temporary files on the drive where the index files are stored.

Or we can change the default index folder location instead of C:\ drive so that the large storage impact the performance.
