I manage a 2010 site. I created an announcements web part. Back when I created the site, I setup the web part to hide items based upon the date in the expires column. Is there a way to have the site delete items based upon the expires date? This is what I thought the site would do, but when postings were still showing up I created a filter to show only items that have yet to expire. I'm now noticing that expired postings are showing up in search results and need to be deleted. What a pain it was to delete 200+ items that should have been gone.

Do I do this with a workflow that checks the expires date and expires old postings? what would be the trigger?

You could check the OOB feature Information Management Policy, so you could set the content to be Move to recycle bin or Permanently delete(or other options).
