My company is having an issue where, in the version history of a document, the original creator of the document is being replaced.  This happens when drag and drop using a web explorer is used, or when the Windows Explorer for SharePoint is used, and when many documents are copied and updated to SharePoint at the same time.  It does not happen when only 1 document at a time is updated.

Here are the steps:

Setup (same for each case):
Create a document on your local PC
Open SharePoint in Windows Explorer view
Copy over the document from your local PC to SharePoint

If you look at version history, it will say:
6/1/2017 9:00 AM UserA

Update - case 1 - correct:
User B opens SharePoint in Windows Explorer view
Copy the document that will be updated to your local PC
Update the document on your local PC
Copy or move the document back to SharePoint using Windows Explorer view, or drag and drop using a web explorer.

If you look at version history, it will now say:
6/4/2017 10:00 AM UserB
6/1/2017 9:00 AM UserA

Update - case 2 - the problem:
User B opens SharePoint in Windows Explorer view
Copy over 10 documents that will be updated to your local PC
Update the 10 documents on your local PC
Copy or move the document back to SharePoint, all 10 at the same time, using Windows Explorer view, or drag and drop using a web explorer.

If you look at version history, it will now say:
6/4/2017 10:00 AM UserB
6/1/2017 9:00 AM UserB (incorrect, UserB replaced UserA as creator)

Update - case 3 - multiple documents:
User B opens SharePoint in Windows Explorer view
Copy over 10 documents that will be updated to your local PC
Update the 10 documents on your local PC
Copy or move the document back to SharePoint, 1 at a time, using Windows Explorer view, or drag and drop using a web explorer.

If you look at version history for each of the 10 documents, it will now say:
6/4/2017 10:00 AM UserB (correct)
6/1/2017 9:00 AM UserA (correct)

I have searched the TechNet forum, SharePoint websites, SharePoint help, and I have not found an answer.
The closest answer I found, is from Microsoft that says when SharePoint gets overloaded and does not know how to update SharePoint version history, it replaces the original creator of the document.

Any direction or help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Did UserA and UserB do these tests in the same machine or in different machines?

It’s hard to figure out the root cause depend on this scenario.

Could you try to reproduce the issue via dragging and dropping multiple documents to library and check the ULS logs of this process? It should give you useful information and tips about this issue.

ULS viewer is a good tool to check for ULS logs:
