TL;DR Problem

SharePoint is identifying a recalculated field (left right functionality) as a text value vs. currency (or number), thus a secondary calculation ends in error. Any suggestions to force this as a numeric value?

Full Question

The purpose of the build out will be to automate a very manual a paper based process in an accounting department. Currently an accountant prepares a reconciliation, prints the work papers, provides them to the manager for review and approval, then provides to a secondary manager who collects all reconciliation, validates that the reconciliations agree to the general ledger, scans all reconciliation, and finally uploads them to SharePoint.

My build uses a Library with email functionality. In the reconciliation, there is a hyperlink in the excel file that formulate an email with a predetermined subject. SharePoint then uses left and right functions to strip down the subject into a fiscal year, general ledger account, and balance (#1). 

In a separate list, we have a complete population of all reconciliations and the required balance (#2) that should be utilized in the reconciliation. In this list, I am using lookup columns to bring in balance (#1) from the library. When I do a calculated column to compare balance (#1) to balance (#2) I am getting an error. 

Based on my review, it appears that balance #1 is not being recognized as a currency or numeric value by SharePoint and that is why I am getting the error. Can anyone please assist with this or possibly provide some alternatives.

Lookup columns cannot be used in a calculated column.

As a workaround, we can use a SharePoint Designer workflow to copy the value from the library into a field in the list.
