This (to my knowledge) is not related to the token cache as we are talking permissions granted a long time ago.
We use AD groups almost 100% of the time. We will add AD groups to a sharepoint permission level (visitor, member, owner) and this works fine. We have a single AD group that covers all staff (with a few exceptions) and we use this a lot where an area is read only to all or contribute to all.

Now if I go to one of these areas and I use "check permissions" for a user I will often see "none" returned.
Yet when I "check permissions" for another user in the same AD group I see the returned info. Contribute is given through the group domain/AD group name (for example)
