I'm not sure about changing the color, I'll find out if there is a style that you can provide to customize that.
Regarding the spacer template, the WorkflowItemsPresenter does have a SpacerTemplate you can provide to display between objects in the collection rendered in the ItemsPanel provided (or in the vertical stack panel by default).
