I have a list populated with items from different departments in my company. I would like to set up the Current User Filter so that the list only displays items that match the department of the logged in user. From what I understand, the Current User Filter should do exactly this. So I add the Web Part for it, I go to edit the filter settings and for "select value to provide" I choose the "SharePoint profile value for current user option". But when I open the drop down list, there are no items in it. Our user profiles do have a "Department" value, so I don't understand why I can't select that in this list. Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?

Please go to Central Administraion->Application Management->Manage Services on server, check if the User Profile Service is started.

Go to Manage services application, make sure you config User Profile service application correctly.
