I have created a Global Security group in AD which can been seen by Sharepoint. But when I add it below it still does not send out an email when the announcement section is updated? there are other groups nested into it? Could that be an issue?

Do you set the security group email enabled? If not, you’re unable to send email to the group. You can create a new Distribution List and Add the group, so you will have control on who can be added to the groups and they automatically are member of the distribution list.
