You go from an existing (original) image to an adjusted image after processing. The second time your adjusted image is your original input. Use a lossless format (bmp, png) so you don''t lose image quality due to compression.

If you want to apply a lossy processing on an image and reapply it again on the orginal image (for example to preview the image processing effect) you should take a copy of the image and apply the processing on the original image then after you finish, you can still use the copy (which is still in the original state).
