Are you using VB.NET now; or, VB6 ?

And, do you want to study JavaScript first as a "language" independent of its use in web-sites: or, do you wish to immediately get involved with making use of JavaScript in HTML pages and/or web based applications ? Do you need to immediately start using JavaScript with jQuery or the other third party extensions that have dramatically changed the usage model of JavaScript in the last years ?

If you do have the time/opportunity, I think focusing on JavaScript, as language first ... putting aside jQuery, interaction with HTML, etc. ... for a while ... and attaining mastery of basic structure, variables, data-structure types, methods, functions, if/then/else structures, control structures (looping) is ideal. Then move on to what classes and objects are in JavaScript; how inheritance and instantiation work.

This book, "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide: Activate Your Web Pages," (O''Reilly) is now in its sixth edition (as of May, 2011), and is very highly rated on Amazon in terms of user popularity, and sales[^].
