When detecting the presence of ''humanity'' (or as near as my users are going to get to it!) on a web form to filter out automated sign up attempts etc., is physical interaction with the page (say onmousedown or onkeydown) evidence that a real person is actually interacting with the page, or can these crafty blighters (BOTS that is - not users) simulate that sort of thing?

I''m looking to implement a CAPTCHA but in a more user friendly way, I''ve never really thought about this before so thought I''d throw this one out there and see if anyone knows the score...

That''s why captchas are used. Because the code is displayed as an image it is very hard for non-human visitors to type in the code. Depending on the risk level the characters are more wobbly and overlap more. But if you would use a 3 or 4 letter code and not to hard to read it shouldn''t be a problem. Also, it is only once when you sign up that you have got to type in the captcha so it isn''t all that bad. And of course, it is common used so users are used to it and understand it.

Developing your own method might scare users away or could maybe reject actual users if not implemented correctly.
