If you are planning on programming professionally then a university degree or college diploma is the way to go, especially in a highly competitive market. Formal education will provide you with the proper building blocks that a developer needs, but you will likely not learn how to code well from school as that type of practical experience can only be learned with the mentoring of experienced individuals. There are of course exceptions to this rule, but in the vast majority of cases I find this to be valid. My personal education was completed in Canada.

Personnaly I think that studying within an organization is something usefull, and here is why.

If you study alone you basically choose your subjects by yourself, so you''ll be more likely choosing stuff you''re good at, or like. You''ll also won''t know what to study, in what particulary order.

I don''t think that the university per se makes a huge difference, a lazy pupil won''t learn much more than a lazy autodidact, but if you''re willing to make an effort, I think that''s nice to have a structure to guide you and help you through you''re preparation. They will tell you what you''re good at, what are your flaws, what you should practice more, etc.
