Most linux distros have a live CD version (eg. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD). Try live CDs first to check linux differences yourself.

If you finally decide to install a specific distro, you will need another HD unless you have a spare partition on your HD. In any case you must be careful, read installation manuals or else you might lose data.

There is no difference in the distros like fedora, suse etc... at the core kernal is same.
Like dmageiras454 says u must first try the distros using live cd and the go with installation. ( Ubantu is more likely windows but too much flashy) go with fedora - its simple ;)

as concern with installation.
U can make "multiboot" i.e u can install windows and linux on same hdd. but be sure during installation.

most of Linux versions takes approx 5GB (at the max) space .

if u want to do multiboot .
Empty one of the drive and delete it,go through installation procedure and i the drive section (ie partition section) select that empty drive for installation. in my advise please first try it on "Virtual machine"

Most installers for Linux will trash everything on the drive, so I would recommend using a second hard drive or computer. Having Windows and Linux on the same drive is obviously possible, but a bit messy and does not always go smoothly.
