Backgammon is not a simple game, to implement a good version is not a beginners task. The strategy involved can get very complex, and it is not a simple task to translate that to software. I have been playing it for 15 odd years, and I still am no-where near expert, or even good.

Pick a simpler starting project - you will only get downhearted!
