Even though this is a really old question if someone else stumbles upon this try calling GridUnload first. So, your code would change to:

    $("#list").jqGrid('GridUnload');
    $("#list").setGridParam({ url: '/new_url' });
         $("#list").trigger("reloadGrid");
}
