I am getting confused on the constrcut of a Primefaces 3 dialog.

You always better use place the <h:form> inside <p:dialog like this

<p:dialog id="dialog" modal="true" widgetVar="dlg">
    <h:form>      
    </h:form>
</p:dialog>
