You should just be able to use equality matchers - does this not work for you?

a = { :test => "a" }
b = { :test => "b" }
$ a == b
=> false
b = { :test => "a" }
$ a == b
=> true

new_attributes = obj.attributes
new_attributes.should eql original_attributes
