Do HTML header tags need to go in order? Or can I have an <h1>, followed by an <h1>?
Does this affect SEO? Or do crawlers not care what order they're in?
I ask because I have a sidebar div which appears before my main content div. This sidebar has a few sub-boxes (such as a twitter box, contact box, etc.) with headers; these headers should obviously be <h2>. But my main content, containing a number of <h1> elements, appears lower down in the document.
Although people are quickly going to respond that header tags do not need to be in order (which is correct) and that it won't affect SEO (which is also correct), you should note that search engines like Google use header tags to help define their snippits which can greatly increase (or decrease) traffic to your site depending on what information is within those header tags because that is what people will be seeing in those few seconds after a search.
